The South-South Peoples Assembly (SSPA) has called on the National Assembly to within 48 hours in the supreme interest of national stability, pass a resolution confirming Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as acting president.

This resolution is contained in a communiqué made available to LEADERSHIP, following a special meeting held by the group in Abuja. The meeting is sequel to the prevailing political situation in the country due to the prolonged absence of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who has been away to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment.

Expressing concern and sympathy for the president, the group said they are worried about the unfolding political implications of leadership vacuum created by his absence, especially the political and contemptuous disregard for constitutionalism as being exhibited by major stakeholders in the country.

The group which called for continued prayers for the president’s quick recovery, noted that the aggregate facts available to Nigerians today, have made recourse to Sections 144 and 145 of the 1999 constitution as unnecessary and belated.

Other resolutions adopted by the group stated that concerted efforts should be made by all to bring to an end the political impasse created by the president’s absence, and advocated the resolution of the current political impasse by constitutional and political means.

The SSPA also condemned the overtures being made by certain elements for military intervention in the nation’s fledging democratic dispensation, stating that "it is most likely to provoke dire consequences and possible disintegration of the country."

While commending Vice President Jonathan Goodluck for his competent handling of the nations affairs, particularly the Jos crisis and Anambra governorship election, the group called on the Niger Delta ex-militants to continue to uphold the tenets and spirit of the amnesty agreement for the sustenance of peace in the region.
